New York Fashion Week (S/S 2015): "I'm just over the hype." Or Am I...?

Lincoln Center for the J. Crew Spring 2012 via nytimes.com

Hey. Hey. Hey. The kick-off of New York Fashion Week is only days away. And the schedule is posted.

I'll get straight to the point and tell you that I'm looking forward to these two butterflies...

Thinking out loud. Runway shows are super cool, but I find myself becoming less and less interested in the glitz and overpriced glamour of "fashion week"—and more excited about what goes on behind-the-scenes. Strategic processes is my weakness. I love sitting around a table with highly creative geniuses to make a vision come to life before its debut, the show is merely icing on the cake. And speaking of overpriced glamour, pulling off a spectacular show during "fashion week" is extremely expensive! Why run a deficit year after year to buy $40,000-dollar lighting racks for fall and/or spring shows that run 20-30 minutes behind schedule--with the actual show running for what feels like...eh, 7-10 minutes long? That's a tad bit insane. Though some may beg to differ, and that's totally fine.

However, Bob Bland, CEO of
Manufacture NY said it best, "You don't have to have a NYFW show every season to have a successful line, and it really is dependent on what your line is about." [Source]  That said, there are many talented designers that are not in the mainstream forefront: Sneak a peek at the S/S '15 schedule. Did your favorite designers make the cut? Maybe so, maybe not. And if not, take it with a grain of salt, because they're most likely shining in other ways, at other places. Personally, I prefer intimate fashion presentations that allow its onlookers to study and appreciate the garmentsnot bolt to the next show.

(No shade, I'm just over the hype.)

Style Moment: Think VINTAGE

Noteworthy! I'm having a "style moment," so stop what you’re doing and have a look with me, will ya? OK, so. I adore this vintage LBD via Vintage Fashion Expo. And I just know the dress would look flattering on most women, especially the bust area *ahem* The look is giving soOo much neck, which is flattering! The over-sized pockets are a plus as well.

I want, please.

A "Wear It With" Tip: wear w /  chunky platform wedges! ;) #nikkistyle

P.S. oh, and did ya hear?
The Vintage Fashion Expo is happening now in LA!

2013 Golden Globes Fashion: nikkistyle's Best-Dressed List

L) Kerry Washington in Miu Miu

R) Megan Fox in Dolce & Gabbana

L) Zooey Deschanel in Oscar de la Renta

R) Jennifer Lawrence in Dior Haute Couture

L) Katherine McPhee in Theyskens' Theory

R) Kate Hudson in Alexander McQueen

...there you have it, my 'Best-Dressed' list from last night's Golden Globe Awards (Red Carpet)!

Unlike last year, there were literally several gorgeous gowns on The Carpet [this year].

Color Trends consisted of elegant nudes, eye-popping reds/coral, and figure-flattering basic blacks. However, I did secretly admire one gown that was ... let's say "different" from the bunch. (Drum Roll, Please?) I actually liked Lucy Liu in Carolina Herrera. You read right. I liked Lucy's gown. The Elementary actress wore them florals like it was nobody's business, and I think she'd kick your ass if you gave her any lip about it.

Anyways, the statement prints coupled with Lucy's confidence really won me over. Honestly, I not only appreciate-but prefer unconventional.

Kirna Zabête at Target: Witnessing Plenty "Downtown Cool" Pieces

Style Notes | I was able to get a sneak peek of Kirna Zabête's clothing for Target at a Pop-Up Shop during Fashion's Night Out last Thursday. Though exciting, I didn't get to really examine anything due to the mad rush of fashion fanatics.

However, I got up, close, and personal with "downtown cool" pieces at today's launch. And, I must say that I totally liked what I witnessed -- stylish tops, blazers, dresses, and accessories that were/are mix and match-able, as well as a boatload of day to evening transitional goodies.

Fashion's Night Out 2012: NYC

Quick Reflection... I've been going to Fashion's Night Out for the past three years; this year was bananas! I had a great time. I got to jam at DVF, attend a block party near Scoop NYC, witness Alice + Olivia models pillow fight on the rooftop at STK, spy on QVC's live broadcasting, sip cocktails at Tracy Reese and Rebecca Taylor, nod my head to reggae at Sephora while a woman from Scotland groomed my brows ... and much, much more! All events were super fun, and star-studded.

Unfortunately, I had some major technical difficulties -- my Android battery died by 7 P.M. (...after charging it all day!) I also forgot the batteries for my Fujifilm camera. Ugh! However, I did manage to snap a few; some photos are on Instagram, and I have a few special ones stashed away for my scrapbook. Anyways, regardless, I had a B A L L ;)

The Pink Issue at FIT - New York City

Inspired by Barbie Play With Fashion! Did anyone happen to see the The Pink Issue exhibit at FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology)? I sure did – and was like a BIG KID in a candy store when I saw all the barbies and super cool displays.

Confession: I played with barbies everyday after school until I was about 13; as you can image I was in Heaven whilst capturing images of Barbie's "glam world."

yes, go see it. If you're in the NYC area this summer be sure to pay your respects to a fabulous visual presentation. All work designed and installed by students at FIT.

Editor's Pick! Best-Dressed Celeb at the VMAs

Style Notes | Some may question my sense of style but I'll say it anyways, Kelly Rowland topped my best-dressed list at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards. Um? No wait, excuse me. Kelly was actually the only celebrity that made it on my list.

Outfit Details: a black and gold Falguni & Shane Peacock dress with a super youthful feathered finishing. And, I especially love the revealing neckline, which accentuates Kelly's overall look. On her feet, she struts in black studded peep-toe Christian Louboutin heels, and carries a small clutch.

Lately, Rowland continuously amazes me with her new-found image, envious figure, and flawless bronzed skin tone. We're watching you, Kelly!

Hot off the Runway...

OK, I'M WOW'ED, NOW.

Style Notes | In my last post I went on and on about not being wow'ed enough to compile an Oscars best-dressed listand I stay true to that. However, after watching E! Fashion Police last night it hit me that I actually do love a Red Carpet look from head to toe: Camila Alves wore a breathtaking black Kaufmanfranco gown, sprinkled with beautiful Lorraine Schwartz jewels. And the hair? Winning! Now this here folks ... is an Oscars gown!

On The Red Carpet: Oscars 2011 (sorry, no best-dressed list this year...)

Quick Blurb! I am going to be perfectly honest. I couldn't come up with a best-dressed list from yesterday’s Red Carpet festivities. None of the looks stole my heart, like 100%. And I mean the complete package—from the dress to the shoes to the jewelry to the hair and makeup. bah humbug!

However, two particular dresses caught my eye (to say the least): Mila Kunis’ flow-y lavender Elie Saab gown and the red Calvin Klein dress that Jennifer Lawrence wore. I like Jen's dress...Mila's too. But what's with the extra fabric near Mila's boob area?

Mila Kunis, Elie Saab

Jennifer Lawrence, Calvin Klein

A Lovely (Memorable) Evening with Project Runway’s Tim Gunn

Reflection | Yesterday I saw Project Runway’s Tim Gunn and had a great time! Gunn was literally a feet away from me (I was in the second row). He hosted a Kate Spade fashion event in a rather intimate setting. I thought: Could it be the fashion God himself?

Thanks to my reliable camera, I was able to capture some fabulous images of Gunn. Also, I was able to record video footage of him giving his signature fashion “dos” and don’ts,” as well as documented some harmless gossip about his thoughts on Project Runway cast members. I’ll try to post the footage in a later post.

Gunn is just as nice in-person as he is on Project Runway; his attitude and body language is wicked consistent. And the man tells IT like no other! Seriously. If your style choices are questionable — he’ll question it — in a non-threatening, mellow tone of course.

Today was a great day!
